When a Child Turns Away
Few things are more difficult than seeing a beloved child turn his or her back on the Lord. What is the Christian mother or father to do in this situation? This week's lead article, from Cilas De Menezes, gives a number of helpful pointers for parents, and encouragement to seek the Lord's glory in what may seem like an impossible situation. Our second segment is a reading on walking with God through dark times from Theodore L. Cuyler's book 'God's Light on Dark Clouds'.

This week we finish Stuart Olyott's article exploring the nature and practice of 'corrective discipline', a subject utterly essential in our non-judgemental age. The Muffling of Truth at Carrs Lane

The ministry of John Angell James, favoured though it was, marked the end of an era at Carrs Lane Congregational Church. When it came to ministerial handover, we observe a weakness of judgement in James which made room for a less than orthodox ministry at the church. The upshot was that sadly James's ministry legacy was not extended and built on with gospel vision by his successor, R. W. Dale. ...

    I believe Paul Washer knows of the Holy Spirit but has not yet been in-dwelt by Him. Remember Apollos from the book of Acts? “Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.” Acts 18:24-25 Notice how Luke uses the phrase “fervent in spirit” to ironically describe a man who had not yet known the baptism of the Spirit. You can know your scriptures and even love the Lord before experiencing the baptism of the Spirit. Or how about what Jesus said to the disciples about the Holy Spirit? “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.“ John 14:15-17 See how the Spirit is “with” them currently (ie, alongside) but only later will the Holy Spirit dwell inside them. So what does this mean? Perhaps Pastor Washer has not yet had the revelation of what it means to be born of the Spirit, or (very unlikely worst case scenario) he is like those who Jesus claims work miracles but also work lawlessness and never knew Him. Paul here seems to love the Lord very much and I would say that the Holy Spirit is with him but not yet inside him. Imagine if Vlad Savchuk or David Diga Hernandez were asked the same question? They wouldn’t point to a book as their answer but they would point to the person of the Holy Spirt. … A confession now, I have experienced the baptism of the Spirit and walked with the Lord like a friend in the past but have let anxiety and fear of demonic oppression drive me away from my calling in recent months. It has been a while then since I felt His presence inside of me leading me like He led Jesus and Paul and David. I didn’t put this mini teaching together it just kind of fell in place with my Bible reading today and the RUclips videos I happened to watch. I sense the Holy Spirit very near to me today. Thank You Lord for Your kindness and not giving up on any one of Your children. I pray for my brother Paul here that like Apollos he can come into complete understanding and receive the full baptism of Your Spirit. Amen 🙏 (If anyone disagrees with me or has evidence that otherwise suggests Paul has been fully acquainted with the Holy Spirit, I am open to criticism and/or correction there is a chance I may be wrong but I still thank the Lord for the helpful delineation of Scripture today.)

      @kevin.o4983 День назад

      So basically you're saying that Paul has converted millions and taught millions and still goes into the mission field where there's war with guns and bombs and famine and persecution and so many other things that he chooses to not disclose, and has not been filled with the Holy Spirit. Oh Please. I know you have your view of the Holy Spirit and seeing the names you mentioned I understand, but the primary evidence of the Apostles being filled with the Spirit was not the gifts or the miracles, they had already done that before. It was the BOLDNESS to do it when Jesus was no longer around. Acts 2. That was the difference. To say the spirit is not inside Him calls him a non-Christian. Read Romans 8 and I will add verse 8 here; " You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. From one brother to another, Read your Bible in its entirety and a holistic view point and full context to get a better understanding

    Be sure of this: The central nerve behind persecution of Bible believing Christians is still at the Vatican. So much for being drunk with the whore's wine, which is ecumenicism. Be ye separate, ... come out from among them ... what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? ... I will receive you ... and I will be a Father unto you. Herein lies our strength. The book by J.A. Wylie "Rome and Civil Liberty" is more relevant than ever. We must learn from history.

    The fact is that the bible tells much of vital and urgent importance that is not even mentioned in this discussion. Rev.13 tells us that in the near future, people all across the world will be forced to worship the first Beast, who will head the global government. People who refuse to take the mark of the beast, and who refuse to thereby deny Christ, will be put to death. Jews and Christians will be persecuted as never before in history. The Lord Jesus Himself taught this in Matt. 24. In this present video Matthew Roberts talks in broad terms about the 'possibility' of coming persecution, but unfortunately neglects to deliver the teaching of the bible. Not once does he cite eschatological Scripture. Presumably, he either is unaware of it, or doesn't accept it, and in common with amillennialists and 'Replacement theologians', tries to 'spiritualise away' the plain teachings of Scripture. It is one thing to look around at the sinful laws and cultures forming around us today, as these men are doing here,, but if one wants true understanding about things to come one needs to study the bible, not just draw a sketch of what is happening around us politically and sociologically. It is not current events that explain Scripture, but Scripture that explains current, and future, events. Daniel, Jeremiah, the apostle John, and the Lord Jesus all prophesied a time of great Tribulation that is to occur, not merely tribulation in general, but a particular period of time which will produce extraordinary Tribulation for Israel and for all believers.. This video is rather like a cosy fireside chat about bad things that are happening and could increasingly happen. But the Tribulation to come will not be in any way way cosy or distant. It will be a nightmare reality for every person on the earth. Not only will the spiritual powers of cruelty and evil and global oligarchy be set loose for a time, but God will also judge this Christ-rejecting world. THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN.. Once the Lord opens the seals (Rev.6), there will follow the trumpet and bowl judgements. It is impossible for the world as a whole to escape its coming fate. God has spoken! But, thank God, for every individual man, woman and child there is still one certain hope. The only place of safety for any individual is through faith in Christ and His work on the cross.. He has promised to keep believers from the great trial which is to come upon the whole world (Rev. 3v10), Accept Christ as your Saviour now, while there is still a short time remaining to do so. Acknowledge yourself to be a sinner, and ask the Lord Jesus to be your Saviour. Ask Him to bring you, personally, into the good of His redeeming work on the cross. He has promised that He will not turn you away.

    With respects to the question is the Church ready for persecution with the reply “we don’t know, …the Church is never ready for persecution” begs the question has he actually read the Bible. Jesus himself said this is what to happen to those who follow him, “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Matt10:16 “But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues…” Mark 13:9 The book of Acts clearly indicates that persecution will happen “…And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem…” Acts 8:1 The Apostle Paul even said of himself before his conversion, “And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you.” Act 22:19 To me this is a reply of men who know they have failed to prepare the church for this and is a direct result of their failure to mature believers in the faith for again Paul states in 2 Tim 3:12 “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,” Of course what does that mean? It means, if the church is not being persecuted it is not living Godly. If it were it would always be in the condition to meet persecution when it comes. The church would be in the condition of the fighter who is always disciplined and trains his body ready for when the combat comes. I was a soldier for 30 years and it was our duty to train men ready for the rigours of combat and it is the ministers job to do likewise in the spiritual battle, otherwise again we see through the words of Jesus as to what will happen if they are not “…and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.” Matt 13:21. Let’s be honest we have fat and flabby Christians theologically speaking, who have a spirituality that is two miles wide and an inch deep and are not ready to face the challenges that are coming because we have grounded them in emotionalism, which is how the world forms its truth and not on the presuppositions of the declared Logos, and what is coming will certainly separate the chaff from the wheat. All that I would say, is Woe to the shepherds who neglected their responsibilities to prepare their flocks and cared more about not offending anyone and therefore compromised on so many basic issues of holiness and the centrality of Christ in the Church. How are your coffee mornings, ensuring you have the right light and sound systems for your so called worship groups, church programs ad nauseum going to help a people to stand with no root. It is a house built on sand and great is going to be its crash. But out of it because God is gracious will be a people tempered by suffering who will truly know the God of the Bible which the current shepherds, not all of course but a large portion, have failed to lead them into relationship with and it will be those who God will use to change the world.

    Having referenced the sin of homosexuality and other sins, 1 Corinthians 6:11 says: "And *such were* some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." If one is truly born again in Christ, one would not define or label themselves in reference to sins they've supposedly repented from. Using the term 'SSA' isn't helpful and is a term that was popularised by known pedophile Alfred Kingsley. Yet teachers like John Stott and Vaughan Roberts quoted Kingsley's research to support the idea that homosexuals is a natural position on the 'sexual spectrum'. Kingsley's hated God and Christianity and his research was fraudulent - see this short documentary: ruclips.net/video/7DftSSszQRc/видео.htmlsi=S5ZREo4A8m9R-_vh. There's no such thing as an 'SSA/gay Christian', as much as there's no such thing as a 'thieving Christian'. Believers who are truly born again are to walk in light, not in darkness (Ephesians 5:12). Homosexuality is especially a vile affection according to God and false converts are to repent and submit to God's will for their sexuality.

      The “winnowing” of the church is a most appropriate term for what’s coming for the western church which has experienced essentially no real persecution or suffering at home for close to five centuries… we see the news from the UK of believers arrested for silently praying across the street from abortion clinics… The Trudeau government in Canada has begun an ever increasing, official legislative campaign against the church there… here in the USA, attacks on churches and synagogues are growing in number and violence… we are about to experience what much of the church has endured elsewhere… When reading Jesus promises in Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21, it is clear the American church is about to be shaken to its core… the social Christians, the frauds and the false will fallout like rats on a burning ship… God will indeed winnow the chafe for the sake of the wheat… the pastors and pew sitters here are woefully unprepared for the coming conflagration… God will purify His Church…

    The background music detracts and distracts from the message. It doesn't make the message any more acceptable, rather the opposite.

    Sorry, this is a little long in response… I agree to some extent , but I do think that this misrepresents what faithful Christians who are same sex attracted, or who battle with same sex attraction, might say. Many faithful Christians are not using the term "gay Christian" because that is an identity based on their sexuality. Therefore, SSA makes far more sense in the way that (as long as they don't lead with their sexual identity) it helpfully describes their own struggle. Perhaps the issue is that the speaker here believes that people can change their sexual orientation and therefore must mortify the flesh in the power of the Spirit to change. We can encourage that, yet pastorally if people have sincerely tried that and still land in the same position where do we go from there? If someone has sought to mortify their flesh and no longer have homosexual thoughts or desires but still have them then what hope can we realistically give them as pastors? Moreover, doesn't it lead to total despair and continual condemnation if they cannot get rid of their thoughts. I agree that a gay Christian is not a helpful identity to embrace, but this side of heaven, I think we need to lovingly engage with people where they are at and call them to live celebrate and holy lives. Perhaps the biggest challenge for many is not in SSA but in living celebrate lives as heterosexually attracted people and not yet married. If we are calling those who battle with SSA to holiness then surely the call needs to be clear to all that ANY form of sexual immorality must be put to death by the Spirit, as we live holy lives for Christ. In terms of illustrations, I think the illustration of coveting a neighbour’s wife isn't an exact equivalent to SSA. Perhaps an "angry Christian" would be similar. To say it's just “who I am” is not helpful or accurate but to say that I am in Christ and a new creation but occasionally battle with my temper is surely a more accurate illustration. It’s the reality of the Christian life. To be an "angry Christian" as an identity is an anathema, but to be a Christian who may at times lose their temper is to be human. It means to be holy pure and righteous and yet still sinful and awaiting perfect sanctification in heaven. Surely that is the more accurate description of what faithful Christians are trying to do today as they battle with their emotions and yet STILL despite their unwanted desires, long to live for their Lord Jesus in every way because he is worth it. Jesus is worth it.

      Hi Colin, thanks for your comments. They are several and varied and perhaps this is not the best setting to trace each one. There's a danger of assuming too much about how Matthew or others would respond to different pastoral situations. The basic point made in the video is that the concept of 'sexual orientation' is a highly problematic one for Christians seeking to order their Christian lives and pursue holiness according to the Scriptures.

      @@banneroftruth thanks for your response. I appreciate that however I think pastorally we need to be careful not to condemn our brothers and sisters who are striving to live for Christ with the often unwanted desires they may have. I think separating those who identify themselves primarily with their sexuality ie a “gay Christian” versus those who know who they are in Christ yet battle with unwanted SSA desires is an important distinction to make. It avoids confusion and pastorally I believe it’s important to distinguish the two. One is identifiying themselves with their sexuality the other is identifying themselves with Christ.
